AFA signed a letter along with 66 organizations asking President Biden and his administration to increase federal procurement of healthy foods. The letter was in response to the USDA request for comment on
“Supply Chains for the Production of Agricultural Commodities and Food Products. Values-driven food procurement as a strategy for achieving resilient, diverse, and secure supply chains.”
AMS-TM-21-0034
Written by Friends of the Earth and the Center for Science in the Public Interest, the letter explained six principles for food procurement. Specifically, the federal government can promote the production of healthier foods throughout the supply chain by procuring such foods. ‘Healthy foods’ include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds.
Procuring such foods in minimally processed forms can improve local economies, environmental justice, public health, racial equity, worker rights, and animal justice.
